Will my Masters Degree really be worth it??

I have a BA in Psychology. I have absolutely NO LUCK in getting any type of job other than some other Joe Blow could get. AKA drive thru at McD's, bagger at grocery store, etc. So I applied for Financial Aid through FAFSA, and will be granted a student loan in the amount that I will need to obtain my Masters in counseling. With the Masters I will receive, I hope to get a job as a school counselor. What I am worried about is that after I am done with getting my Masters, that I will be in the same boat I am now, but have about $20,000 in student loans to pay off as well. ARGH!! Is it really even worth to further my education. I am really nervous.

I'm in the same boat, about to graduate with a BA in History and have absolutely no job skills. Alot of my friends say the same thing, even ones who majored in Business, say they can't get a decent job. I definitely plan to get my masters, I say go for it. You'll learn and grow alot more, and you will be able to get the job you want. With that degree, you'll be making good money so paying off your loans shouldn't be that bad. Try to consolidate them too.

it wont be worth the trouble

Well, a BA in Psych won't really land you many jobs. A master's will help you get a job as a counselor or a teacher, but that's about it. If you are into that type of work, the MA in Psych should help you get a job...I wouldn't worry too much.

The problem with psychology is that a lot of people major in it because it is 1) fairly easy and 2) interesting to most people. However, it doesn't have many actual applications in the workplace. A master's in counseling will help get you that job.

Be grateful that your debt will ONLY be 20k after undergrad and grad...I have a BS in Psych, going for a MA in Forensic and will have about 54 in total debt plus interest.

A Masters should help you get a job, even if it's in an entirely different field.

That is entirely up to yourself and what you do with it afterwards, whether or not it is all worthwhile.

It will all depend on what you want to do as a career and where you are living etc. You might want to do some research on career options in locations at the Bureau of Labor Statistics site, lots of good stuff there in terms of finding job titles and what they pay at entry level/median/highest etc for different regions of a state etc. It will also show you what employers are typically looking for in terms of education for those jobs etc.

Good Luck

I have my MA and it has helped me get some work as an adjunct instructor, but it can also hurt you (depending on the job you want) if you are competing against people equally qualified but without the degree as HR types might tend to think you will want more $$$ or will move on to a %26quot;better%26quot; job as soon as you find one so they won't hire you as a result) Just do your research B4 you run up the big loans.

If you have a BA, go back to your alma mater to their career development/jobs type department, most colleges %26amp; universities have departments that can help you find careers/job opportunities that match your education (they want you employed after college so that it looks good to future students and that you might donate some $$$ back as an alum) they want you happy, so you might try that as well.

Not if you are in the job market of the U.S. You should better youself because you want to.
